  • Eurythmie

Dance, painting, drawing, music, and sculpturing are all arts and skills that anyone can engage in. However, with Eurythmy, it is a totally different ball game. This is because Eurythmy is the art that unites everything within itself, making the thoughts and sounds visible, expressing them in forms and movements.

The word „Eurythmy“ originates from the Greek and means: beautiful, rhythmic, flowing movement. Even though there are several similarities to ancient Greek mystery dances, Eurythmy, owing to its emergence from the human being of the present, is in its essence new and modern. Through a deep schooling of awareness and perception, speech becomes visible speech and music becomes visible song. In this transformation, the human being experiences and forms his physical, soul, and spiritual nature to an enhanced degree. He perceives his creative forces and Nature and expresses them artistically

Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy, developed Eurythmy at the beginning of the 20th century. From his insight into the essence of the human being, he showed how the human form can be used as an instrument to express its infinite possibilities for movement. Through Eurythmy, the laws of speech and music are translated into visible movements. Marie Steiner von Sievers accompanied this work intensively and with great personal commitment.

When a poem or music piece is expressed through Eurythmy, the content is shown through color, symbols, rhythm, timing and melody. The eurythmist and the onlooker experience the harmonising of the soul forces through the creative energy of word and sound. This makes Eurythmy an important counter balance to the one-sided nature of the highly technological 21st century that leaves little room for the developing forces and true artistic life.

  • The Eurythmeum Stuttgart

In 1921, Rudolf and Marie Steiner were looking for a place for the first Eurythmy school that could be founded in a culturally vibrant city and that could be a place where students could immerse themselves in Eurythmy and foster an exchange and dialogue with other artistic streams.

Alice Fels (1884-1973), commissioned with the founding of the school, decided  on Stuttgart and already in 1922, he lead the first training course. In 1935, Marie Steiner von Sievers (1867-1948)  handed over the artistic and pedagogical management to Else Klink (1907-1994) and Otto Wiemer (1888-1960). Despite political and economic restrictions, they both carried out their work until their deaths. Their vision and commitment was not only limited to the training of Eurythmists. From the beginning, a stage ensemble made the Stuttgart Eurthymeum and Eurythmy known throughout the world with their many tours and guest shows.
