The Free Youth Seminar Stuttgart

The Seminar is like a “global-village” offering you a creative space to work together for a year with peers (19-28 years old) from all over the world on life- and professional questions. In courses with artists, entrepreneurs, educators, medical doctors, social-, natural- and spiritual scientists, questions to current events will be raised and discussed, and interdisciplinary connections will be forged. You can extend and deepen your personal, social and creative capacities in the artistic courses. In addition an „ experimental and supportive-space“ is offered for undertaking your own initiatives and gathering practical experience.

    experiencing community

An international community of young people from widely differing countries such as Japan Brazil, Canada, Argentina, South Africa, Russia, and Europe come to the youth seminar to live, study and meet together on a daily basis. Already in the daily life of the seminar young adults, from a variety of cultural backgrounds, get to know one another, and discover both their similarities and differences. Empathy, flexibility and tolerance become the foundation stones for living together. One can experience what it means to be part of this whole human family in miniature, through practising living one of the most important future questions: how to shape globalisation with a human face. Various courses like choir singing, social training days or artistic projects, support this by training, and increasing the awareness for working together in a social way.

    trusting ones-self

To find ones orientation in an increasingly complex and fast-living world demands a constant training of lively and independent thinking and judgement. The wide variety of morning courses, a sort of „general study course“ help here. They offer a comprehensive picture of the human being and an understanding of history, the tasks of today and the future and penetrate into the living connections in nature and in spiritual spheres. Through the thorough, critical and undogmatic approach in study-groups with the texts and thoughts of Rudolf Steiner, including the works „Theosophy“ and „Philosophy of freedom“ you will be introduced to the holistic and future oriented anthroposophical approach.
Through independent projects, presentations, discussion and working groups a schooling, both in content and method of dealing with new themes is achieved
A variety of artistic activities such as speech training and acting, eurythmy, singing playing music, clay modelling, painting, and Bothmer gymnastics help to develop independent practise and aim to deepen ones capacity to experience and strengthen self-expression.

    shaping the world

We cultivate self-organising capacities. We offer practical insights into various professional fields, enabling meetings with interesting people and their innovative projects, Through these contacts, possibilities may arise for doing a practical during the trimester breaks or after the seminar. Due to the self-organisation of the house and garden, opportunities are presented to take on responsibilities. Individual counselling allow for personal questions about ones own development including concrete vocational advice. Last but not least a wide space for initiative taking is offered, in which you can bring your own interests and questions and take practical steps on your own personal path.
The Youth Seminar aims to train and expand key qualifications that go beyond simply answering knowledge questions. Concentration and overview, creativity and consistency, organisation and flexibility, team capacity and improvisation, courage and initiative-taking strengths are qualities that are cultivated and enlivened then they are the foundation upon which every new life-phase is based. Instead of premature professional specialisation these qualities enable balanced intellectual, artistic social and practical exercising grounds for a healthy development of the whole personality.

We wish to support you to find the necessary clarity to find your own impulses, as you wish to bring yourself into connection with them, and the courage to follow them, so they may connect you to future oriented tasks in the world!

  • The Free Youth Seminar Stuttgart

    The Free Youth Seminar Stuttgart:

The Free Youth Seminar emerged from a desire of young people looking for a free space where they could orientate themselves and experience and practice Anthroposophy before making career decisions. This desire came from participants who had taken part in the career orientation weeks that took place in Stuttgart since 1950. The desire was taken up by people such as Helmut von Kügelgen, Fridrich Benesch and Johannes Tautz who also formed the first management board.

At the end of 1963, they found a house at Ameisenbergstraße 44 and consented to a house purchase agreement of over 500,000 DM even though they had no means at their disposal. The sum was collected and paid for after half a year.

One can see how this undertaking needed to be made manifest so urgently and on April 13th, 1964, the foundation ceremony took place in Rudolf Steiner Haus. It was the time of young people with a pioneering spirit looking to liberate themselves from the consequences of World War II by searching for new life and work structures.

Dietrich Esterl illustrated in his book on the history of the Uhlandshöhe how Rudolf Steiner, already with the birth of the first Waldorf School and the teacher training, had thought up the idea of a building where  young people after school could  freely meet to occupy themselves with Anthroposophy and the needs of the time.  The Youth Seminar has implemented this idea and works out of this spirit to this day.
